The Craft of Sacred Landscape
Every Rejected Stones installation combines natural stone, marble statuary, living plantings, and warm lighting into a unified sacred landscape โ built to last, built to witness.
Our Craft
Each installation is custom-designed for the church it serves โ its tradition, its grounds, its surrounding neighborhood. These are the four elements we weave together to create sacred landscapes that speak without words.
Foundation
Stone is the oldest building material in human history, and the most theologically resonant for the Church. We source fieldstones, granite boulders, and river rock that carry the weight and texture of the natural world โ anchoring each installation with a presence that feels both ancient and eternal.
Larger boulders serve as entrance markers or sign bases. Smaller fieldstones create borders, pathways, and ground-level composition. The result is a landscape that looks as though it grew there โ because in a sense, it did.
Sacred Art
Hand-carved marble statues have graced the exterior of sacred spaces for two thousand years. We continue that tradition, working with skilled artisans to select and place figures that honor the particular tradition and devotion of each congregation.
From small marble angels flanking an entrance sign, to a full-scale Our Lady of Grace or patron saint, each statue is chosen in close conversation with church leadership โ ensuring the installation is a true expression of that community's faith.
Living Beauty
Stone speaks of permanence and eternity. Plants speak of life, renewal, and the cycles of grace. Together, they create a landscape that is never static โ always growing, always changing with the seasons, always offering something new to the daily commuter who passes by.
We select plantings for four-season interest, low maintenance, and visual impact from a distance. Lavender, hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, hostas, and roses are among the species we most frequently use โ chosen for their fragrance, color, and suitability to the region.
The Night Witness
Darkness does not silence a sacred landscape โ it transforms it. Warm uplighting turns marble statues into glowing presences, casts dramatic shadows across stone, and illuminates plantings with a soft golden glow that draws the eye from the road long after sundown.
We design each lighting scheme to be dramatic from the street, subtle at close range, and energy-efficient throughout. LED uplights concealed at ground level, in-ground path lighting, and warm spotlights on key statuary combine to create a nighttime presence as powerful as the daytime one.
We visit your grounds in person โ reading the light, the traffic, the existing landscape, and the spirit of the place.
Our team creates a full landscape plan in close conversation with church leadership โ every element chosen for your tradition and space.
Skilled craftspeople bring the design to life โ stone placed, statues set, plantings established, lighting wired and tested.
The installation is complete โ and begins its decades-long witness to every passerby, every day, in every season.
